Heads of moors (Teste di moro) is a symbol of eternal love
According to legend, during the Arab domination in Sicily, a beautiful girl lived in Palermo, in the Arab quarter Al Hàlisah (today Kalsa). While she, as usual, she took care of the plants on her balcony, she was noticed by a Moor who immediately fell in love with her and made no secret of it.
The girl, struck by so much feeling, reciprocated the young man’s love. Unfortunately, one day she discovered that he had a wife and children in his land. She betrayed and offended in her honor waited for the night to enact her revenge. As soon as he fell asleep she killed him, cut off his head, made a pot of it where she planted some basil and put it on display outside on the balcony. Only in this way her love would be with her forever. Since then, the custom of building terracotta pots, "graste" in the shape of a Moor’s head.
